Disney Plus Review: Not Just for Kids

The House of Mice conveys a lot more than Mickey Mouse. It’s a place where Jedi Knights fascinate viewers with their powers and Marvel’s anti-heroes wreak havoc and save lives. It is a classroom for learning about nature or the cosmos. It’s a paradise for Disney princesses, who don’t have to fall into any category. And it’s the only place where you can stream the latest Pixar movies, like Turning Red.

Like many other Disney products, from Rising of Skywalker to Encanto to WandaVision, its streaming service is a phenomenon. Disney Plus was launched in November 2019 and by the end of 2021, the platform had nearly 130 million subscribers and plans to expand to other countries this year.

His flagship original series, The Mandalorian, gave fans theories about Yoda, merchandise, and memes. His first series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, WandaVision, quickly became one of the most popular shows in the world. All of this success has made Netflix and other big names take notice. And at $ 8 a month, it’s still one of the best prices on streaming.

The main question is: is it worth the money for you? If you are a cord cutter, especially if you have children, Disney Plus is probably a must-have. With a few notable exceptions, Netflix loses a lot of Disney and Marvel content. If you or your kids want to watch Daredevil or Liv and Maddie, for example, you will need a subscription to Disney Plus. It’s the best streaming service for kids, but it also caters to older viewers.

Whether you can do without Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime Video depends on your budget and priorities. Disney Plus, for example, doesn’t have the steady stream of new original broadcasts found on Netflix, but it’s still among the top streaming services. It has a huge catalog of popular TV shows and Disney movies that can’t be found anywhere else, a well-designed app, and an affordable price without having to look at advertisements. For these reasons, he deserves CNET’s Editors’ Choice award.

The content

Unlike the meager selection of programs offered by Apple TV Plus at launch, Disney launched 500 movies and 7,500 television shows on the first day. The catalog continues to grow with additions such as Turning Red, Encanto, Hocus Pocus 2, Moon Knight and Agatha: House of Harkness, and more. There’s a lot of Marvel, a lot of Star Wars, a Pixar boat, and a pinch of National Geographic (which is owned by Disney). Depending on the content and device, both 4K HDR video and Dolby Atmos surround sound are supported.

With so many movies and TV shows already online, chances are if you think of a Disney movie or TV show, it’s there. Even before you start your search, the interface offers plenty of suggestions, including a great mix of nostalgia, princess movies, originals, and superhero action.

Some of the Disney content from pre-1990 and beyond may be forgotten in the annals of your memory, but the streamer interface will make you relive past movies like Flight of the Navigator. While not everything is available – the missing episodes of Andi Mack and Recess might disappoint young fans – the search interface works similarly to Netflix, suggesting similar content instead. There is no shortage of things worth looking at.

If you’ve used a streaming service other than Disney’s Hulu before, the Disney Plus interface will look instantly familiar. At the top of the home screen is a web-like carousel with a selection of Disney’s greatest hits.

Below that, the most popular brands appear as static icons: Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. Hovering over the icon will animate it, and clicking it will show a short animation before the branded page appears. Although the interface is designed for low-power devices like USB sticks, we found little difference between the dozens of devices we tried.

The Disney Plus catalog also includes Pixar titles such as “Toy Story”, Marvel superhero blockbusters, animated films and “Star Wars” films, National Geographic documentaries, and many children’s titles from Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and Disney XD.

On both the brand pages and the home page, rows of icons are named by genre, helping you refine the content to suit your needs. Disney told us that, like the Netflix engine, the Disney Plus interface will adapt over time to the type of content you watch.

On the left side of the screen is a Netflix-like sidebar that you can use to search for content or choose from your pre-defined profiles.

The only real way to set up Disney Plus is through the user profiles, and by default, your main profile provides access to all content. It can’t be set to a child profile, but you can disable or enable autoplay or change the primary language. In comparison, kid’s profiles have a lighter blue background to highlight content appropriate for younger viewers.

The biggest problem I’ve found with the UI is that some popular things might be hidden: for example, you might not know the Muppets exist. But that’s a problem that bigger services like Netflix also suffer from.

We’ve tested Disney Plus on Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, iOS, Smart TV (LG and Samsung), Android TV, and across the web and they all worked as expected. Voice commands worked well on Apple TV, Fire TV, and Roku, taking us to the show’s title or the Disney service in general. If your streamer supports 4K HDR, there’s a good selection of titles like recent Marvel movies and series and new Star Wars content like Mandalorian, but others like recent Muppets titles are only in HD.

Also, please note that some of the content on Disney Plus may have changed since you last saw it elsewhere. The Simpsons, for example, is currently only available in widescreen, with no 4:3 option for previous seasons that are not in native HD. The first scene Han shoots in the original Star Wars film A New Hope has been re-edited. As you can see in the video below, it’s not perfect.

is one of the cheapest streaming services out there. As a standalone option, it only costs $8 per month. However, there are several ways to bundle the deal with Hulu and ESPN Plus to save even more.

Hulu Plus Live TV customers get Disney Plus and ESPN at no additional cost as long as Hulu pays them. New and existing Hulu subscribers who don’t have the Live TV package can sign up for the Disney package. It costs $14 per month for the version with ads and $20 per month without ads. Currently, Hulu members who don’t have Disney Plus can get it as an add-on option for just $3 a month.

Compared to its competitors, Disney Plus is on the lower end of the price scale. Since Netflix charges up to $15.50 a month for its dual-screen streaming plan and HBO Max $15, it depends on your wallet and tastes.

Since it’s available at such a low price, we highly recommend trying it out for at least a few weeks. Between Marvel movies, the Skywalker saga in 4K, and dozens of Disney classics to please your age group, there’s enough here to keep you busy.

Should you take it?

For legions of Disney Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar fans who want to enjoy these films and their additional features, the service is easily worth the monthly cost. The same goes for parents who want their children to enjoy Disney’s myriad of family-friendly movies and TV shows. And the same goes for those who want to follow the latest adventures of Baby Yoda or Boba Fett.

Will people give up other services in order to afford these? Possibly. If the choice is between this or the Apple TV Plus, take that. What if it comes to choosing between Disney and independent Hulu and having kids? Listen to this. If we were to rank the services in order of importance, ours would be 1st Netflix 2nd Disney 3rd Prime Video. Your priorities may be different.

Original programs like The Mandalorian, Loki, and The World According to Jeff Goldblum are fun, but it’s the programming that spans nearly 100 years that will likely encourage users to renew their subscription every month. Disney Plus is fun, easy to use, and relatively affordable.
